(de-news.net) – On the occasion of the inaugural National Veterans’ Day, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz commended both active and former members of the Bundeswehr. Writing on the platform X, he emphasized that the Bundeswehr constitutes an integral part of German society. The men and women who serve or have served, he stated, are deserving of gratitude, recognition, and respect.

Approximately one hundred commemorative events were held across the country, with the principal ceremony taking place at the Reichstag building in Berlin.

Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius characterized the Bundeswehr as a vital component of society. Speaking at a military assembly in Hamburg, he asserted that the armed forces safeguard peace and security in both Germany and Europe. Minister Pistorius expressed his appreciation to the soldiers for their commitment. Veterans Day, he noted, is intended to honor all men and women who have defended the nation in uniform—even at the risk of their lives.

President of the Bundestag Julia Klöckner described the Veterans’ Day as a pledge to enhance the care and support provided to veterans. Henning Otte, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, called for improved incentives to encourage young people to undertake voluntary military service. Thomas Röwekamp, Chair of the Defence Committee of the German Bundestag, proposed initiating a public debate on the introduction of a universal service obligation for both men and women.

The Bundestag established this commemorative day in the previous year. The day of remembrance honors ten million soldiers and their families, acknowledging and paying tribute to their service. Beginning in 2025, the day will be observed annually on a weekend near June 15th, as a formal expression of gratitude and recognition for the service of current and former Bundeswehr personnel.
